It is not rare for the Finnish education system to be praised at the news. Whether it is the high scores in PISA results, excellent teachers or the equality of education. The question remains: why should other countries follow the lead and adapt to the Finnish system? Well, the short answer is that they shouldn’t. On the other hand, adapting some of the pedagogy, approaches and methods, and fusing them into the local system – now that makes sense.
Yes, there is a curriculum to follow as a teacher – however the teachers in Finland have a lot of independency followed by a whole lot of responsibility. In general, performance is not observed nor graded – instead there are annual feedback session between the teacher and the student as well as the parents. The parents are greatly involved in the progress and development of the child. This is how the learning is seen as an entirety, a lifelong commitment to learn and develop. The teacher’s asses each student, evaluate their individual learning ability and see them as unique cases – instead of a blank canvas where the curriculum is forced upon to.
Play it out!
One of the major differences between the Finnish Early Childhood Education & Care ideology and the rest of the world, is the approach to learning methods. By no means this is the only difference within the education methods, but surely it is an interesting one.
Learning through play has been proven to be effective and the fundaments of it, is that it is tailored to the age and development of a child. ”Much of the early childhood education and care in Finland centers around play, free discovery, collaboration, interaction, own initiative, concentration, and learning to take responsibility for one’s own actions. ECEC in Finland emphasizes the so-called soft skills of balanced growth and taking others into account, over quantifiable metrics.”
Finnish expertise is available overseas these days – however one must identify that changes in such profound matters do not happen overnight. Huippu Education Ltd. has entered the Middle East markets and has introduced an ideology of Curriculum Fusion – a way to bring elements of the renown Finnish pedagogy to a local context. For a school to seek this opportunity, they need to be open minded, ready to hand over some responsibility to the teachers from the management and to have the willingness to involve the parents as well as to really see the children as individuals and address that in daily practices.
I must thank you Anna Eghaghara for being a part of the project Educational REFORMS in India and making us aware of this new system of education. Hope the educators will get some new innovative ways to teach and would like to see you in India in future to bring out a change in lives of students and revolution in teaching learning process
Thanks for this collaboration at International Level. I invite more people to join this project and be a part of this initiative in the following ways
Gone are those days when we used to consider our kids as blank slate where we as a teachers were supposed to write our thoughts and ideology. Now the kids are well acquainted with new concepts and ideas. We can be a guide to them to construct a new knowledge based on their previous knowledge. This is what the constructivism is.
It is a pedagogy of teaching where student in the classroom is actively involved and their ideas are well listened and worked upon. There is no rote learning or spoon feeding of subjects while the child learns through exploration and with his own experiences .
Some of the techniques used in this type of learning are
Project based activities
Problem solving techniques
Inquiry based learning
Advantages of this approach
Child is not a passive listener as in lecture method.
Child develops the reasoning skills.
He feels motivated to ask questions.
He tries to make his own theories and verify them.
Learning through this method is long lasting.
Unfortunately in India education means curriculum completion and percentage oriented results, such an innovative approach is not being adopted. There are only handful of schools which are practiing this. Creating such an atmosphere where child could use this cognitive skills can help him to grow better in all perspectives. Now is a time to challenge the education system and at the same time , to come out from percent oriented results and performance.
As a parent we always want to give our kids best be it food or thoughts. Sometimes unknowingly or due to ignornance we get indulge in the wrong food practices which can adversely affect the heath of young children. The food we are giving to them become reason for their heath hazards through the chemicals containing in them. Here is list of few chemicals and wrong practices which we are following and need a check :
Ajinomotto in Chinese food – Have you ever thought why your child likes more the outside food and why does it tastes better compared to the one we make at home. It is because they add Ajinomotto ( Mono sodium glutamate) or MSG , a very harmful and carcinogenic chemical if taken at large quantities. This also present in processed food and packed food.
Artificial Colours – When we have so many colours in our natural food why do we need to to give such artificial things to our kids. Food prepared in restaurants is full of colour as they add it to make it more appealing . These chemicals can enhance the symptoms of ADHD in children.
Caffeine – If summers means cold drinks for your kids then you are spoiling your kids. High in sugar content and caffeine can not be comprised with natural drinks .
Bisphenols like BPA- can cause problems with your child’s immune system and interfere in puberty too. It is mainly found in 3 and 6 number plastic.
Heating and reheating in plastic – When you cook food and reheat the food in plastic in microwave, it makes the food poisonous. Even you should avoid putting the hot food in Tiffin boxes if they are of plastic.
Healthy food practices to follow
Choose fresh and home made food over packed and outside food. Once in while it is ok.
Prefer to cook meal fresh and consume immediately.
Use glass container to reheat in microwave if required .
Prefer steel tiffin and water bottles for kids .
Use cloth napkin instead to foil paper to wrap food in lunch.
Make home made sharbats in summers.
Use natural colours while cooking food e.g. turmeric or saffron for yellow or beetroot for red or pink colour.
Irrespective of age or gender,at home or at workplace,we always look for an appreciation by the ones whom we are connected in any way. If we as an adult feel that our work should be appreciated or acknowledged , think about your little monsters who all the time trying New things , discover new challenges for themselves. They go beyond their limits to win . As a part of growth and development, they need to be appreciated.
Few words of appreciation can do magic for your child. There are various psychological reasons for why every child need to be appreciated
It builds confidence.
It motivates the child.
It brings the self satisfaction.
It strengthens the bond between you and your child.
Being a parent it is important to use such phrases. The more you appreciate, the more they will become responsible for their actions.
How do you appreciate your child as a father or mother. Share your experience in comment section.
